Women’s Self Defence Training

Women's Self Defence Training

The Australian Trauma Support Centre (ATSC) offers a range of program and services to support your overall wellbeing, including Women’s only Self Defence and Situational Awareness training.

The training aims to empower women to not only prevent violence but to also decrease fear and anxiety and increase confidence, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. Learning self-defence can help you feel stronger and more confident in your body. Women report more comfortable interactions with strangers, acquaintances, and intimates, both in situations that seem dangerous and those that do not.

The facilitator of the Women’s only Self Defence and Situational Awareness program is Tracey Grinter. She has worked in the welfare sector for the last twenty years and is a qualified Social Worker. She’s spent the last decade managing the local Victims Assistance and Family Violence programs. She also has a passion for martial arts and has been studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the last 6 years. She has seen in herself the benefits any kind of self-defence and situational awareness training can have and now wants to share this with others.

The program recognises the importance of situational awareness to prevent violence altogether as well as self-defence techniques aimed at addressing the most common attacks on women.

ATSC offers a group program, individual sessions, and packages for corporate organisations.

Group program

The six-week program is aimed at increasing situational awareness and learning techniques that support, inform, train but most importantly empower women. The techniques are based on Brazilian Jit Jitsu and the principles of leverage, timing, and energy efficiency, meaning anyone can do them regardless of age or athletic ability. A male co-facilitator allows the attendees to see the techniques work! Beyond the physical techniques the program reinforces situational awareness, risk assessment and verbal and psychological strategies women can use to set boundaries and feel safe. The group setting is a fun and safe environment where women can also develop connections with other like-minded women.

For more information please see the Women’s Self Defence FAQ’s here.

Individual sessions

These sessions are targeted at those that may have had their own experiences of being a victim and would benefit from the support an individual session can offer. The research shows that the disempowerment caused by an act of violence may leave a woman with everlasting emotional and psychological scars. These individual sessions are not only aimed at exposing victim survivors to key awareness principles but also through Tracey’s extensive trauma informed practice experience, helping victims to understand the trauma responses they are experiencing.

Corporate packages

We can tailor a package to suit your organisation or business including those in the health, welfare, emergency services or real estate sectors. The program provides attendees with training in relation to situational awareness and verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies.  We also provide several options for employers looking to run self-defence programs for team building, or as part of their Health and Wellbeing initiative.

The sessions can range from 60-minutes, 90 minutes, half day, or full day format. We can deliver a one-off session or multiple sessions at your workplace or at our venue.
